How Does Stump Grinding Work?

Grinding looks simple from the yard. Here's what's actually happening underneath.

We Use Purpose-Built Tools

A stump grinder isn't a wood chipper and it isn't digging the stump out whole. It's a rotating wheel lined with teeth that shaves the stump down in passes, which is what lets us grind below grade without tearing up everything around it.

We Check the Site First

Before the grinder starts, we check what's nearby, underground utility lines, irrigation, fences, and any trees you're keeping. Grinding too close to another tree's root zone can damage roots that run closer to the surface than most people expect, so that gets extra care.

We Do the Job Right

We typically grind 6 to 12 inches below ground level to ensure the stump won't grow back. That's also deep enough for you to plant grass, sod, or a new bed on top. A single stump usually takes 30 to 60 minutes once we're set up, and larger or older stumps with more established root systems take a bit longer.
